Design of Wireless MIMO Systems: From RF Specifications to Architecture Exploration

Wireless systems are pervasive and their need to reduce the overall area and power imposes challenging requirements on the RF front ends. For this reason, nowadays RF systems are highly adaptive and rely on MIMO architectures with multiple antennas. Digital signal processing algorithms and control logic are tightly embedded in RF transceivers to compensate for RF impairments, to increase resilience to interfering signals, and to support multiple communication standards.

In this webinar, we will design and simulate a wireless transceiver starting from high-level RF budget analysis with gain, noise and third order non-linearity using RF Toolbox. The RF budget model will be progressively refined using Circuit Envelope simulation to include additional impairments and seamlessly integrate the RF front-end with digital signal processing algorithms.

This webinar will focus on the development of complete RF models for the simulation of MIMO wireless systems. We will take into account the impact of antenna arrays, non-linear amplifiers, filters characterized by their S-parameters, and we will integrate these components in the simulation of adaptive beamforming algorithms.

  • Rapid RF model implementation from budget requirements for system simulation.
  • RF budget analysis characterized with gain, noise and third order non-linearity.
  • Integrate antenna arrays in RF front ends taking into account coupling and edge effects.
  • Simulate wireless adaptive systems including control logic and digital signal processing algorithms for beamforming, automatic gain control and digital pre-distortion.

Dr. Giorgia Zucchelli is the product marketing manager for RF and mixed-signal at MathWorks. Before joining MathWorks in 2009 as an application engineer focusing on signal processing and communications systems with specialization in analog simulation, Giorgia worked for two years at NXP Semiconductors on mixed-signal verification methodologies. Before then, she worked for Philips Research, where she contributed to the development of system-level models for innovative telecommunication systems. Giorgia has a master’s degree in electronic engineering and a doctorate in electronic engineering for telecommunications from the University of Bologna. Her thesis dealt with modeling high-frequency RF devices.
