I am currently experiencing the same problem using Matlab 2020a colormap.

Yup, I have this same problem. It's super annoying. You can use the property inspector instead. Matlab just crashes with the colormap editor.

@Image Analyst "I don't believe they fix old versions."
That depends on your definition of "old". We do provide Update releases, which come out after the general release, that contain bug fixes for some of the issues that have been reported against the general release or in previous Updates. Looking at the downloads, if you try to download release R2020a you'll be installing release R2020a Update 8 which was released on February 17, 2022. You can see that we fixed many bugs in release R2020a and its Updates by looking at the Bug Reports.
For the past couple releases, the latest Updates are:
  • R2024a Update 4 (June 13, 2024) with these bug fixes
  • R2023b Update 8 (May 16, 2024) with these bug fixes
  • R2023a Update 6 (January 19, 2024) with these bug fixes
  • R2022b Update 9 (April 2, 2024) with these bug fixes
@Xingwang Yong Given that the latest Update for release R2020a was over two years ago, I have to say it's unlikely we're going to release a new Update for that release. But if you see other bugs that are preventing you from upgrading or updating, please contact Technical Support to report those bugs so their fixes can be considered for a future Update.
The descriptions of the ones you gave are pretty brief, but none of the ones you described sound familiar off the top of my head. [Looking back in the Bug Reports going back to release R2017a I find only one that includes the word "colormap" and that's a Signal Processing Toolbox that uses the word not the colormap command or the Colormap Editor.]

@Adam Danz @Steven Lord For this colormap editor bug in 2020a, I do contact support 3 or 4 years ago. They told me it is "fixed" in 2020b, which turns out to be a completely a new colormap editor with other bugs, see this post. I do not hope for a direct fix for this bug in 2020a, given it is an old version and probably only a small set of people are affected by it. The reason I post here is to make other users aware of this bug so next time they have the problem they can just search and know it is a known bug.
For other bugs, I contacted support, too. Most of the time, they told me the bug will be fixed in the future, which I can not confirm.

I just ran
>> colormapeditor
in r2024a and the default/initial window size is 538 pixels wide by 507 pixels high (verified by doing a screen capture and checking it in Adobe Photoshop), which is just a small portion of my screen. Additionally, it is resizeable and scalable. What initial size were you getting?

This bug is on 2020a. Since later matlab versions use a completely new colormap editor, this bug is gone. But for people use 2020a, this bug is still there.
