Plotting without Specifying a set x range

The following code should work. Why doesn't it work? How can I make this work?

x=[0 1 2 3 4];
y=[2 9/4 38/17 161/72 682/305];

plot(x,y)

Index in position 1 is invalid. Array indices must be positive integers or logical values.

plot(x,y)
