How to specify the absolute length (e.g. in [mm]) of the x-axis when printed to e.g. pdf?

I need to compile a large figure containing a number of seperate diagrams printed from matlab + some images (non-diagrams) into one figure. For this reason I need the x-axis of each seperate diagram to have the same absolute length..I have tried to follow the guidelines for the use of "position" and "InnerPosition", but so far no succes.

Are you setting the Units property on the Axes to be centimeters?

axes('Units','centimeters','Position',[1 1 10 10])

Or

set(gca,'Units','centimeters','Position',[1 1 10 10])
