Image processing in matlab

i am trying to make a project in matlab . That is there will be pre-defined gesture for every action ie zooming in , brightness , next image. But i am facing problem in finding the number of peaks raised ( ie how to calculate the number of fingers shown in camera). then using the bit - classification we can separate every gesture ie for first three fingers (01110 - thumb,first,middle ,third, last) and many more we can conclude (11000 -thumb and first finger). can you please guide me? algo and code both welcomed? if you have some relevant information to share, you can mail me at [e-mail]
