What Is Simscape?

Steve Miller, MathWorks

Model and simulate multidomain physical systems.

Simscape™ enables you to rapidly create models of physical systems within the Simulink® environment. You model systems such as electric motors, bridge rectifiers, hydraulic actuators, and refrigeration systems by assembling fundamental components into a schematic. The models you create can be placed in subsystems so that you can reuse them in other models.

The models you build are based on physical connections. To model a mass spring damper, you simply connect mass, spring, and damper components, and Simscape determines the system level equations for you. This is much easier than deriving the equations and implementing them in code or by connecting input-output blocks. As the system becomes more complex, the modeling method enabled by Simscape becomes even more powerful.

Extending the model is as easy as copy and paste. You can create custom components using the MATLAB® based Simscape language. You can take the code we provide and modify it to include the effects you need for your design. You can integrate electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other physical systems into your model using the components from the Simscape family of products.

Simscape offers a set of fundamental components in many physical domains and it provides the technology for simulating and analyzing physical systems. The Simscape add-on products provide additional models and analysis capabilities for applications such as electric power networks, heating and cooling systems, and mechatronics. You can integrate these with three-dimensional mechanical systems and analyze their behavior using an animation of the simulation results.

Simscape models can also be converted to C code. This enables them to support testing of embedded software in configurations such as processor-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing, which is much safer and more efficient than testing on hardware prototypes.

Simscape models integrate directly with block diagrams in Simulink, state machines in Stateflow®, and MATLAB functions. You can simulate your entire system in a single environment. This accelerates tasks like designing control systems and optimizing system-level performance. For more information on how Simscape can support your entire development process, please visit our web site or select one of the options below.
