Capon’s method overcomes this problem by using the degrees of freedom to form a beam in the look direction and at the same time the null. The weight vector chosen in this way is often referred to as the minimum variance distortion-less response (MVDR) beamformer, since, for a particular look direction, it minimizes the variance (average power) of the array output signal while passing the signal arriving from the look direction with no distortion.
