Linux Matlab using CPU at IDLE when using lots of memory?

Has anyone seen this problem:
You load a lot of data in the workspace (say, 6 out of 8 GB), and you leave matlab open. On linux, I see constant spikes of the CPU even though Matlab is not doing anything.
Haven't used Matlab on windows in a long time, but I don't remember that ever happening?
