Import a file excel with both strings and numbers

Hello everyone!

I have to import from an Excel file into a Matlab tabel some data that are both strings and numers. If I use readtable, the table I get contains only strings, also the numers are put into '' so then I can work on them as numbers.

What can I do?

I need to import the excel file IF20190610.xlsm into a matlab table. the file contains both numbers and strings.

the matlab table has to import strings as strings, numbers as numbers and empty spaces as NaN.

My professors suggested to do this:

opt=detectImportOptions('IF20190610.xlsm');
opt.DataRange = 'A2';
T=readtable('IF20190610.xlsm',opt)

and it works.

I would like to know if there is another way.

Given the fact that the code you give "works", I am certain there is another way. However, to tell you what the other ways are and be certain that they would work for you, I would need to know which MATLAB release you are using, and which operating system, and whether you have Excel installed; and I would need an excerpt from the file, the first few lines at least.
