How to improve the error performance of LDPC code?

Hi, I have done LDPC encoding and decoding using Meckay -Neal algorithm which is in mathworks,its helped me a lot in terms of coding and theoritical understanding,but the problem is when i run the code its error performance(BER) is very low of 10^-1 for snr of 0-5,and this value is varying for each time when i run for same specifications,i am not getting why this is happening and what are the modifications need to do for that code,can any one suggest me what are the modifications need to do to get good performance.
