MATLAB for Active Queue Management simulation

I have a project to complete, it is related to the simulation of AQM techniques on a TCP based network. I have to evaluate the performance of different AQM techniques through simulations. Since I`m a newbie in MATLAB I would highly appreciate some help with it, the project needs to be done only with programming (source coding) and no Simulink. I`m not able to find any tutorials or guide lines how to begin with, I know what the problem is and how the network needs to interact, but don`t know how to program that with MATLAB. Any hints and suggestions will help. I have some knowledge in C and OOP with C++ but I have never used them for simulations.
Edit: As far as I understood the states of the network should be represented like a Finite state machine in an cell array, but I`m still in a search how that can be represented in MATLAB
