I'm looking for a good manual where I could learn on power law distribution and maximum likehood (a beginner-medium level).

I would recommend asking a statistics forum/blog. If you have questions about implementing the above in MATLAB then ask those here.

I recommend you give this a thorough looking over, and get the article to which this site is a companion. They give MATLAB files for doing some of the calculations as well (including data).
