Do the names of any of the sheets in the file you are trying to read contain any non-ASCII characters, such as Chinese characters? If so, try renaming those sheets to contain only 7-bit ASCII characters. This is an acknowledged limitation in MATLAB in today.

If that does not help, can you provide more information:

1. The exact command you are typing in MATLAB.
2. The specific version of Windows, MATLAB, and Office you are running.

Do you have Excel installed on your computer? I'd guess that you don't. Or you have only the Excel "Starter" edition.
