What can be the reason behind joining two curves.

Seeing the image, it can be said that which two curves have to be joined. Programmitically, what can be used to decide which two curves are supposed to be joined. Please do help..
If gradient could be of some help. Please help

Can you provide a larger image, and additional details on which curves you want to be joined?

Can it? I can't see any obviously intended connections. If you just want to close small gaps between curves, consider imclose()
