The best way to resolve a License Manager Error -9 is by reactivating MATLAB with the activation client.

Linux

The activation client is located here:

/usr/local/MATLAB/R20XXx/bin/activate_matlab.sh

Once you have launched the MATLAB activation client:

1. Select "Activate automatically using the internet."
2. Log into your MathWorks account.
3. Select the correct license.
4. The username field should auto-populate with the correct user name. Leave it as is.
5. Confirm the activation information.
6. Click "finish" to complete the activation process.
7. Restart MATLAB.

For step 4, the username not auto-populate . when I tupe my username in my ubuntu, the problem still there.

The username you should use for ubuntu is the same as the response you get back for running

whoami

in a terminal session.

Unless, that is, you are running MATLAB using sudo in which case you would need to use root . Running MATLAB using sudo is not recommended.

Most of the time in order to run MATLAB as sudo, you would have had to have typed in a sudo command at some point to invoke MATLAB.

If you are currently sudo and you are at the command terminal, then your prompt will be # instead of $

only if you had chosen this folder /usr/local/MATLAB/R20XXx during the instalation. In my case I chosed a totally different location. But, then again the activate_matlab.sh file was truely in the bin subfolder.

/home/kbaizid/.matlab/R2022b_licenses is the folder that would typically be used to hold individual licenses for username kbaizid

/usr/local/MATLAB/R2022b/licenses/license_IITxxxxxxx.iit.local_4XXXXXX_R2022b.lic would probably be for a Designated Computer license for license number 4XXXXXX installed on hard disk with serial number IITxxxxxxx but I guess it could potentially be an individual license.

Anyhow, look at the locations listed and delete any R2022b license file you find there (well, unless you have multiple people using the same machine, then be more careful.) Then run the activation client in the MATLAB installation directory.
