I want to change the permission root for the pathdef.m which is one of the files of matlab. I did this by typing (gksudo nautilus)

Once I did that, everytime I write

cd /usr/local/MATLAB/R2018b/bin

./matlab..

this is what i get on the terminal as a response.

You may probably have changed the contents of the pathdef.m file in such a way that caused this error. Could you share your version of pathdef.m?

No, I would say that you have somehow replaced /usr/locall/MATLAB/R2018b/bin/matlab with a copy of pathdef.m . I would suggest deleting that (in case it is a weird link) and then reinstalling MATLAB .
