Axis Label Affecting Size of Plot Area

I ran into a problem with the formatting of Matlab figures and I tried to summarize my problem in the figure attached. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at it and suggest a solution based on your experience.

Kalyan,

Thank you so much for your answer but the limits of the y axis in the second plot have to stay the same. So it will start from 10^-10. The exponent -10 being a 2 digit number distorts the width of the second plot which is what I am trying to fix.
