hi, how to import data from an Excel file

hi, I am fairly new to Matlab and i am stuck at a problem.
Problem: I have an MS Excel file containing a set of sequence of random number. Now i want to find the mean and variance for those numbers. I want to do so by using the numbers directly from the MS Excel file by importing them.
