Creating ragged arrays in NetCDF-4

¿Is this possible using the MATLAB netcdf package? I haven't (yet) found anything in the R2018b docs referring to VLEN types .
If indeed not possible, any recommendations for a workaround much appreciated: c-library+mex? python+matlab? HDF5?
