How to speed up zooming in and out, or using pan

Hello I have a figure as a result of matlab code, it is like a map, large amount of data. i need to zoom in and out all the time but it takes so long time due to the large amount of data, Any idea how to speed up this? thanks

the input is shapefile (map). the output is the same shape file as lines and points as a figure in matlab. Dealing with it takes so long time because it includes so much data. how can i use it ( eg. zooming) faster?

What is a "map" file? Why does "input" and "output" matter, if the problem concerns panning? What exactly are "lines and points"? Is it a raster image or a set of graphical elements? How many is "so much" exactly? which graphics renderer are you using?
