Why do I receive a segmentation violation error when I open Simulink

After opening MATLAB, and clicking on Simulink, when I attempt to Open a file with button on the left, the screen displays "Starting Simulink" for 10 seconds, and then spits out the error message below.

Restarting my computer will produce the same error, but if I try to click open again on a new MATLAB instance without restarting my computer I get the following error message:
MATLAB is selecting SOFTWARE OPENGL rendering.

Did you ever solve this problem. I am getting a similar problem on my pc running Fedora and MATLAB R2018B.

I updated from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04 and that fixed the issue. I can't remember how I figured out how that was an issue, but I think it had something to do with the Java library being incompatible.
