In general, characters/text is not a valid datatype in Simulink, but there might be workaround depending on *where* the text needs to be displayed. Could you specify that information?

For example, change the switch block annotation depending on the switch position?

There are 2 possibilities here:
1 - It is possible to define enumerated types in Simulink. With those, you can define for example 1=Red, 2=Blue, 3=Green, and see the text instead of the number in the Display block.
Look here for an intro on the concept: http://www.mathworks.com/help/simulink/ug/defining-simulink-enumerations.html
And to this function to define the enumerated type: http://www.mathworks.com/help/toolbox/simulink/slref/simulink.defineintenumtype.html
2 - If all you want is display some text on a block mask or an annotation, then you can use a MATLAB S-Function or an Event Listener to execute any "set_param" you need to make that happen.
