Convert a Cell to String

Can you convert a cell to a string? How do you do so? Are there better types to use instead of a string? Or should you convert a cell to something first and then convert that thing to a string? I have a single column with 100+ rows of data that are currently cells being imported from Excel that I would like to manipulate as strings to separate the data.

The question is not clear. An answer requires to know the contents of the cell elements and it depends on what you want to do with it.
