We would like to know what exactly the binary "C:\Program Files\MATL​AB\R2017a\​bin\matlab​.exe" does

We would like to know what exactly the binary "C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2017a\bin\matlab.exe" does and how it differs from launching the binary "C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2017a\bin\win64\matlab.exe" directly ?

Does it setup a PATH ? Does it setup Preferences ? Would would we miss if we launch "C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2017a\bin\win64\matlab.exe" directly ? Thanks
