How to control external machinery by matlab?

How can I control an external machine, for instance to advance to the next sample after finishing a measurement?

Thank you for your answer, but this is not what I am looking for. I don't use Simulink, and I just want to output 1 bit or maybe 1 byte using Matlab only.
