How does matlab handle bounds in Nonlinear Least Square problems?

For technical reasons, I would like to know -- possibly from a theoretical viewpoint -- how does Matlab handle bounds in Nonlinear Least Square problems.

It doesn't generate candidate points that fall outside of the bounds.
