patch coloring

I have a patch (vertices and faces)containing about 4000 vertices, the structure is open at both ends. I also have colors corresponding to about 100 points that are spread non homogenously. I now want to fill in the rest of the colors by interpolation but cant seem to find out how. I have tried using inpaint(_nans) but it doesn't work.
