Try an inverse filter, like wiener2().

Once an image is "ruined" it may not be possible to restore it to it's original self. I mean if you blurred out an image so much so that it was just a uniform gray image, there's no telling what it might have started as. Virtually any image could give that blurred mess, given enough blurring.
