Cannot get Ubuntu 16.10 to launch from unity launcher with R2016b

I cannot get the Unity Launcher to successfully open MATLAB R2016b on Ubuntu 16.10. The splash screen displays, then the icon in the launcher pulsates for a few seconds and then appears inactive. All my other applications simply just worked.

I see a lot of people encounter this problem: Why does MATLAB have such trouble working on Ubuntu for many years?
