Font issues between file output types (eps, png, pdf) - Helvetica?

This should be a simple question:

See the attached plots - a .pdf and .png version of the same plot. They have been saved out using 'print'. Why are the fonts different? They're similar, but different (see the 1's for example). I actually prefer the PNG font.

What's going on here? The PDF (and .eps, which I can't upload here) files output looks like Helvetica to me, whereas the PNG font is essentially a snapshot of the figure as it is displayed within the figure window in Matlab.
