I uninstalled the Matlab7.01 for 32bit under the path C:\Matlab7.01, although my computer is windows 64bit. Some residues were still in the original folder, which I cannot delete by any way. I then installed 2011b for 64bit, however when I ran my program using it, the error message popped out:"C:\Matlab7.01\bin\win32\atlas_Athlon.dll. 1% is not a valid win32 application matlab".
I went back to check the folder Matlab7.01, found this C:\Matlab7.01\bin\win32\atlas_Athlon.dll, however I do not know how to deal with it. I check online about the problem, however couldn't find a way to tackle it. Could you please help me?

Not sure if the old files are conflicting. Try installing R2011b in a completely different folder, e.g. C:\MATLAB\R2011b\.

I strongly recommend to install Matlab to the "Program Files" folder in Windows7/64.

You really need to get your system to a clean slate first.
  • Clean up the install you have using the uninstall program
  • Clean up leftover remnants of the old install(s) -- you mention there is an old install. You might need to get Administrative (elevated) permissions to remove them since it's in Program Files -- but you should be able to remove files. If you can't remove files with elevated permissions, there is something else wrong.
  • Check the System and User PATH variables and remove references to any installs you may have had.
Then start your reinstall.
On a 64-bit Windows system, 32-bit programs should go in a folder under "Program Files (x86)" and 64-bit programs will go into a folder under "Program Files".
There are a number of things that happen with the way the system directories are presented to a 32-bit program that can start getting very confusing. I provide an example here if you are interested.
If a thorough cleanup and reinstall doesn't solve the problem, contact installation support.
