Why does MATLAB crash on Linux with the error 'dlopen: cannot load any more object with static TLS'?

When I try starting MATLAB in my Linux machine , MATLAB crashes displaying the following error:
dlopen: cannot load any more object with static TLS
At times MATLAB actually starts, but crashes when I try to plot something, throwing the same error.
Why is this happening?

This is a known issue when using MATLAB on some Linux systems with NVIDIA graphics cards. For more information and ways to prevent further crashes please refer to the following bug report:
