Can't identify the function

Here is the function "approximate" in the code, which I'm trying to analyze. I can't find the the explanation for that, I guess in new versions of matlab it changed the name. Does anybody knows what is it?

V_n = approximate(@(z) max((1-tau)*z + 1/(1+r_n) * g_n * V_n(z/g_n), varsigma * g_n + W_n), z_grid);

It must be a user-written function. There is nothing by that name in the on-line documentation. Search your script file and MATLAB path for it to see if it has any documentation as part of its code.
