Use a network license if it is available

I have worked out how to combine my Individual Standalone Named User license with a Network Concurrent User license from a server when I need, occasionally, to use a toolbox I don't have on my license.

However, this method results in long startup times when I am not attached to the network as that MATLAB's process of looking for that license times out. Is there a recommend method of starting MATLAB to use the Network Concurrent User license only if it is available and to start quickly without it if it is not?

I am running MATLAB from OS X.
