Is it possible to use variables in Filter Design task controls

When trying to use the Live Editor, I tried to add a filter design task. I want to be able to use variables from the workspace in the filter design, but when I try to input the variable name, I just get a pop-up indicating "Value must be numeric". I would expect the control to evaluate the variable?
