Matlab figures stuck in roman (serif) font - including tooltip dropdown

I seem to have an issue with my figure window being stuck in a serif font. I don't recall setting anything to this.

I have tried various combos of setting the font of the figure via:

set(gca, 'FontName', 'SansSerif')

...and others, to no avail (I cannot set individual fonts for axes, etc.)

Worth noting: it appears that the figure window "flashes" twice, and set this serif'd font, like the figure is redrawing and changing the font. Am I missing some setting here? Any idea what is going on? worth noting that the figure tool tips also are in this serif'd font, see image below:

Answering my own question:

My interpreter was stuck in "LaTex" (or "latex").

I fixed this by setting my default text interpreter to default:

set(groot,'defaulttextinterpreter','none');  
set(groot, 'defaultAxesTickLabelInterpreter','none');  
set(groot, 'defaultLegendInterpreter','none');
