how to tell if latitude-longitude points are contained in an irregular raster

Hi, there is a matlab function: 'contains', which can be used to determine if raster contains points in world coordinate system. However, this function only works for the regular raster. How to find the locations of latitude-longitude points in an irregular raster with latitude-longitude coordinates? Any thoughts? Thanks.
