trouble importing excel files

I am having trouble importing excel files into matlab. I have matlab version R2013a and whenever I try to use the import tool I get the following error message, "spreadsheet is empty or invalid." What can I do to avoid this message?

Try xlsread function
[a,b,c]=xlsread('yourfolder/yourfile.xls')
