Modify matlab .m functions copyright issues

Hi,

Can I modify a matlab function (e.g., signtest.m) and distribute it (for free) in a toolbox for statistical analysis? Which are the copyright restrictions?

I want to perform a Bayesian test instead of a frequentisti one, so the first part of the function will be more or less identical (inputs and data processing) only the test will be different (I do not compute p-values but credible probabilities).
