Pulse shape filter design

HI

I am designing a communication system in which pulse shaping will be required.

I am using square root raised cosine transmit filter available in simulink.

My question is about deciding the parameters for the pulse shaping filter.

I know it is used to reduce ISI but how many symbols a filter response shoiuld take?

what is the optimum roll off for a filter under consideration etc.

If you can guide about some nice literature on the topic,it will be of great help.

As a reference I have attached screen shot of the parameters.

I used same tuitorials for designing too but was confused in definig values of the parameters.
