I am a windows user who got a new mac laptop (work with institutional license). I installed it and activated but it does not work (neither the editor nor the compiler).

The compiler requires installing xcode and the xcode command line tools. If you are using the most recent MacOS version it is also common to need to edit some configuration files, but that depends on OS release and matlab version.
The editor problem sounds similar to what some people were experiencing with r2019b on Catalina. I think upgrading to Update 4 was said to fix that.
Which MATLAB version are you using, and which MacOS release?

Catalina uses about 8 gigabytes of disk. MATLAB uses 2 gigabytes to 13 gigabytes depending which toolboxes you install, with 6-8 gigabytes being common. Xcode is about 10 gigabytes. So roughly 30 gigabytes between them. You should be fine on a system with 64 gigabytes or larger.
If you are using MATLAB on a MacBook Air... Those were never offered with less than 120 gigabytes.
