How to decompose the image into illumination and reflectance components using Matlab?

I have an image (L) and I want to estimate the illumination component (I) and the reflectance component (R) separately. Does anyone know how to do this in Matlab?
oR if I estimated the illumination I , how to estimate the reflectance R using the following equation on Matlab?
R(i,j) = log ( L(i,j)) - log ( I(i,j))
I did this on matlab :
R = log ( L+1) - log(I-1)
but all the values of R are negative !!!!. is it normal ?????? any help would be appreciated
