Instrument control through deployed web app

I suspect the answer to this is no but...

I'm toying with the idea of deploying web apps to control some of our experments (rather than standard deployed apps) but our scripts require control of equipment connected to the PCs in question. I like the idea of deploying the app once and subsequently easily keeping it updated accross multiple machines.

Since the web apps are running in a browser, I was just wondering if there is any external connectivity from a web app? - RS232 would be useful for example. I could experiment with this myself but just wondered if there was a quick answer!
