How to trace the first red pixel?

Hi

I have this image (see attached). I want to sum all pixels for certain columns. The user should be able to determine manually the starting point of scanning (rows,columns), and the algorithm should start scanning summing all pixels down until the first red pixel and then moves to the next column, until the last column the user has defined.

Any recommendations please?
