General Multithreading possible on Matlab?

I am new to thread programming and need to implement it. However, nowhere have I come across any solid reference to create threads on Matlab IDE. There are references to using parpool/parfor/parfeval, spmd, applying thread into underlying java framework etc.

1. Is this an attempt to establish some kind of synonymity with the actual threading?
2. Provide some simple example to help me understand as to how to apply it to a logic developed on Mat IDE
