How can I split a column?

Hello, I have a 1312x16 char column (2 bytes) which I need to split and store in two different 1312x8 (1 + 1 byte)

Data looks like:

      0000000001110001
      0000000001110101
      0000000001111000
      0000000001111100
      0000000001111100

It should look like:

      00000000
      00000000
      00000000
      00000000
      00000000

      01110001
      01110101
      01111000
      01111100

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but can't you just index it out:

col1=data(:,1:8)
col2=data(:,9:16)
