How to trigger our Algorithm by external Sensor

Hi I am working on a project and I need help about how can we trigger our code or algorithm by an external sensor..For example in my project I need to monitor IR sensor and on the bases of IR signal I want my algorithm to start and generate a decision ..Thanks in Advance
