How to get a trigger line on video to count people that cross that line

I'm trying to create an automatic people counter by setting up a trigger line on a video and then counting the amount of people that cross that line by using optical flow vectors. I'm new to image processing on MatLab and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this before?
