Guitar string recognition MatLab program?

It's the first time I use matlab and I have an assigment I need your help with. So, I have to make a MatLab program that , when a guitar string is plucked , it regognizes it. Any help or someone to point me in the right direction would be greatly apreciated. Thanks.
