can anyone please help to make understand how lwt (lifting wavelet ) command works

i m doing my project in integer wavelet transform and i m using the commands x=liftwave('db4','int2int'); and lwt(signal,x); this results in a formation of cell of varying sizes {4x3}or{6x3}.... by liftwave instruction ..further lwt instruction results in formation of Approximate coefficients and detailed coefficient... My question is 1) how cell values are found and what is their actual meaning . Secondly cant it work if we apply lwt(signal,'db4', 'int2int') directly...why we are using liftwave....I have tried it but it gives different values of coefficients ....i m not able to understand from the documentation..please help
